Moonday – Eclipse! April 14, 2014

Happy Monday – tonight (starting at about 9:54 pm PDT and peaking at about 12:40 am PDT) is the first full lunar eclipse of a set of 4 that will occur about every six months.  How cool is that?

The moon will turn blood red during the eclipse as the moon travels through Earth’s shadow.

And that’s not all:  Mars will be right above it, the brightest it will be all year (as tonight will be when Mars and Earth are the closest they will be during their annual trips around the sun).

Here are some pics to entice you outside tonight (from the article linked above):

Rusty Red moon!  Why is it red?  Earth’s atmosphere’s glow!  It’s like the moon will be reflecting all the sunsets and sunrises of the world.

Here’s where Mars will be relative to the moon:

Mars also has its own moons: Phobos and Deimos (Fear and Panic – named by their discoverer Asaph Hall in 1877 after the sons of Ares).

Wishing you all clear skies for viewing this amazing celestial event!

Personal blog challenge:  create a theme for every day of the week, just for fun!

Today is Monday, and today’s theme shall be The Moon!

Which is, of course, completely UN-original, as the Monday means “moon day”: “Old English mondæg, monandæg “Monday,” literally “day of the moon,” from mona (genitive monan; see moon (n.)) + dæg (see day)”  (thank you, Online Etymology Dictionary!)

But moons are cool, be they The Moon or any of the 173 in our solar system (discovered to date).

We’ll start simple, so here’s The Moon:

Also, fascinating things will be occurring with the moon this month – Full Lunar Eclipse, viewable in North America, April 14-15!
